This piece involves layered materials and layered meaning. From a distance, the piece is a composition, nothing more, with attention given to colour and form, while striving for an overall sense of balance. Step closer and it becomes apparent that the subject is a crucifixion or torture scene, hence the title. The body is attached to the pulley on the left and the viewer can play (or toy) with it, making the point that torture is a grotesque form of play. Finally, the bars of the prison are mirrored so that the viewer can ask “For whom is this unspeakable act being done and why?”
